How to Lubricate a Composite Front Door Lock
Your composite door lock is used every time you leave or enter your home, so a little regular maintenance can help keep it operating smoothly.
If your lock is beginning to feel stiff or the key isn’t turning as easily as it normally does, it may be time to lubricate the cylinder.
At Buildmydoor, we recommend using graphite powder for lubricating the lock cylinder on our composite doors.
What You Will Need
Before you start, you’ll need:
- Graphite powder suitable for door locks
- A clean cloth
- A suitable applicator or straw
You only need a small amount of powder, so there is no need to over-apply it.
How to Lubricate Your Composite Door Lock
1. Clean Around the Lock
Use a clean cloth to remove any dust or dirt from around the keyhole and the face of the cylinder.
2. Apply the Graphite Powder
Carefully apply a small amount of graphite powder into the keyway.
Don’t use more than you need. A small amount is generally sufficient.
3. Operate the Lock
Insert your key and gently turn it several times.
This helps distribute the graphite within the lock cylinder.
If the key still feels unusually stiff, don’t force it. There may be another issue with the lock, door alignment or cylinder that needs attention.
4. Wipe Away Any Excess
Use your cloth to remove any graphite that has collected around the keyhole or on the door.
The aim is to leave the area clean and tidy.
How Often Should You Lubricate a Composite Door Lock?
We recommend lubricating your lock approximately every six months as part of your regular door maintenance.
It’s easy to forget, particularly when the lock is working perfectly, so adding it to your regular home maintenance routine can help.
If your lock is becoming increasingly difficult to operate despite lubrication, don’t force the key or handle. Contact us for advice so we can help establish whether the lock, cylinder or door alignment needs attention.
Why Use Graphite Powder?
Graphite powder is a dry lubricant and is traditionally used for lock cylinders. Unlike oily or greasy products, it doesn’t leave the same sticky residue that can attract dirt.
However, different lock manufacturers can have specific maintenance recommendations, so if you’re unsure what is suitable for your particular lock, check the manufacturer’s guidance or contact us before applying a product.
