What makes a composite door secure?

In today’s world, home security is a top priority, and one of the most effective ways to protect your property is by choosing the right front door. Composite doors have become a popular choice for homeowners not just because of their style and durability, but also because of the high level of security they offer.

What makes a composite door secure is largely down to its multi-layered construction. Unlike doors made from a single material, composite doors are built using several different components. Most have a solid timber core, which gives the door weight and strength. This core is supported by internal subframes often made from uPVC or reinforced steel, which add extra stability. The outer layer is typically made from glass reinforced plastic (GRP), a material known for its strength and resistance to impact. This combination results in a door that’s extremely difficult to force open or damage.

Security also comes from the locking system. Composite doors usually feature multi-point locking mechanisms, which secure the door at several positions along the frame when locked. These systems significantly increase resistance to break-ins compared to standard locks. Many models are fitted with high-security cylinders that are designed to resist snapping, drilling, and picking—tactics commonly used by burglars. In some cases, these doors can also be fitted with smart locks that allow for keyless entry and remote access.

Our composite doors also incorporate steel reinforcement inside the frame and core. This extra layer of protection makes the door even harder to bend, break, or remove from the hinges. The GRP skin that coats the outside of the door is particularly tough as well. It resists scratches, dents, and damage from both attempted break-ins and general wear and tear. Unlike painted or veneered wood, GRP maintains its appearance and structure over time, meaning the door continues to perform at a high level for years.

Another key feature of a secure composite door is its certification. Some of the most reliable doors carry the Secured by Design accreditation, which is a police-backed initiative in the UK that sets strict standards for crime prevention. To earn this certification, a door must pass a series of tests that simulate break-in attempts using common tools and methods.

If the door includes glass panels, those are typically made from toughened or laminated safety glass, which is much harder to break than standard glass. Laminated glass has a special layer that holds the glass together even when shattered, making it extremely difficult for an intruder to gain entry through the glazed section.  We have over 60 styles of glass, so you're sure to have a safe but stylish door if you choose to glaze it.

Finally, a composite door’s security is reinforced by its hardware. Strong hinges, often fitted with hinge bolts, and other fixtures like spyholes, security chains, and reinforced letterplates all contribute to making the door resistant to tampering or forced entry.

All of these elements come together to make composite doors one of the most secure options available. With their advanced design, robust materials, and high-performance locking systems, they offer homeowners both peace of mind and long-lasting protection.
